How to Win

Be the first person to run out of cards.

How to Lose

Let someone else run out of cards before you.

Chapter One

The Setup

  1. Pick a dealer. The dealer is the person who shuffles and deals the cards.
  2. The dealer gives each player 7 cards.
  3. Pick up your own cards and look at the years. Keep your cards hidden from the other players (like in poker, your hand is yours alone).
  4. Set the rest of the deck aside. You won't need it again.

Each card has the event on one side and the year on the other. In Timelapse, you get to look at the years on your own cards, but keep them hidden from everyone else.
Chapter Two

Who Goes First

The player to the left of the dealer goes first. After that, play moves around the table to the left.

Chapter Three

Playing a Round

  1. The first player picks any card from their hand and plays it in the middle of the table, year showing.
  2. Going around the table to the left, each player picks a card from their hand and plays it on top of the pile, year showing.
    • If your card is newer than the one below it, play continues to the next player.
    • If your card is older (or you don't have a newer one to play), you pick up the entire pile and add all those cards to your hand. Then you start a new pile by playing any one of your cards in the middle, year showing.
  3. If every player around the table successfully plays a newer card without anyone picking up the pile, discard the whole pile. The next player to the left starts a new pile.
  4. Knock! Before you play your final card, knock on the table to warn the other players you're about to win.
  5. The first person to run out of cards wins the round!
  6. The first player to win 3 rounds is the Ultimate Champion. They shall be bestowed graces until a new champion is crowned.
Chapter Four

Tie-Breakers & House Rules

Q Cards players love inventing their own rules and naming them after each other. Here are the ones we've collected so far. Make up your own and we'll add it to the list.

Same Year?

If your card has the same year as the one below it, check the month. Look up both events at qcards.co/cards. Whichever event happened closer to December counts as the "newer" one.

The LeVeque Addition (optional)

Forgot to knock and played your last card anyway? You don't win the round. Instead, pick up all the cards in the middle of the table, then swap hands with the player who has the most cards.
